== Political career ==
Following the Carnation Revolution and the end of more than five decades of dictatorship in Portugal, Guterres rapidly advanced within the country's political structure. In 1992, he became the leader of the Socialist Party of Portugal, and in 1995, he was elected Prime Minister of Portugal. His tenure as Prime Minister lasted until 2002. After withdrawing from domestic politics, Guterres was appointed United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2005, a role he held for ten years until 2015. During this period, he consistently urged wealthy Western nations to increase their financial and humanitarian aid to refugees and migrants. Guterres also served for a time as President of the '''Socialist International''' and, due to his humanitarian efforts, received several awards, including the "Freedom Award."
== Secretary-General of the United Nations ==
Following the formal vote by the [[United Nations]] General Assembly on 13 October 2016, António Guterres assumed office as Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 January 2017. He was one of the leading candidates for the position in 2016, and the members of the '''United Nations Security Council''' unanimously nominated him as the final candidate without significant disagreement. One week after this nomination, the UN General Assembly officially selected Guterres as the new Secretary-General of the organization, succeeding '''Ban Ki-moon'''.
