Amal Ashmawi was born in Minya, a region near Egypt, into an affluent and religious family. She served as Minister of Education during various periods and was renowned for her zeal for Islam. This lady strove to reform the education system in Egypt but was arrested by the military. During the regime of Gamal Abdel Nasser, in 1954 CE, she was arrested without cause despite being over sixty years of age; she was not released until her son, Hasan Ashmawi, surrendered himself. Her son was one of the leaders of the Brotherhood and a member of its Guidance Bureau, whose name was at one time associated with Hasan al-Hudaybi.

Education
She pursued various stages of education and strove until graduating from the Faculty of Law; however, after marrying Munir al-Dalla and their joining the Brotherhood's call, she devoted herself to serving her household and inviting others to the Brotherhood movement.

Activity in the Sisters' Section
She was active in the Sisters' Section and exerted a prominent influence therein until, in 1944 CE, she was elected, in collaboration with Amina Ali, Zaynab Abd al-Majid, and Fatima, as head of the Executive Committee responsible for overseeing this department. She also proposed the establishment of a school for orphans under the supervision of Fatima Abd al-Hadi. She succeeded in obtaining authorization for this project from the Ministry of Education, which was then headed by her father, and further suggested working at the school so that the resulting income would be dedicated to orphaned children.

Collaboration with the Brotherhood
No one forgets her role concerning prisoners in 1948 CE. Nor did she limit her sacrifices to this alone; rather, her home witnessed historic meetings held in the early 1950s CE to select a successor to Hasan al-Banna as leader of the group. Four members of the Brotherhood were nominated to succeed Hasan al-Banna: Salih Ashmawi, the group's representative; Abd al-Rahman al-Banna, brother of Imam al-Banna; Ahmad Hasan al-Baquri; and Abd al-Hakim Abidin, the group's secretary. Important meetings were held in her home, and the selection of Imam Hasan al-Banna's successor also took place there; thus, during difficult times, her home served as a meeting place for the Brotherhood, and Mrs. Amal Ashmawi was pleased to serve those present.

She was renowned for her sincerity in conduct and simplicity, as well as for her ambition in spreading the call and caring for the families of Brotherhood members during times of hardship.
Hasan al-Banna regarded her as an exemplar among the educated, preaching, and jihad-oriented sisters who sincerely undertook this vocation, dedicating their time, emotions, and resources uniquely to others.

Patience and Steadfastness in Prison
She considered financial pleasure meaningful only when sacrificed in the path of God; she opened her husband's treasury to cover expenses for the families of imprisoned brothers during hardships. She exemplified a patient woman whose husband was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labor following the Mansoura Incident. She did not despair and maintained contact with ladies such as Amina Ali, Nuayma Khattab, Zaynab Ghazali, and Khalida.

She continued her jihad until, like other Brotherhood members, she was subjected to torture in the prisons of Gamal Abdel Nasser, transferred to Qanater Prison, and became a factor in alleviating the suffering of detained sisters therein. Regarding her conduct toward the prison administration, when Sister Fatima Abd al-Hadi was bleeding, she shouted at the prison authorities, saying, "Are you waiting for her to die just as she has passed away?"

Death
After her release from prison, she continued her path alongside her husband and passed away in 1995 CE during the era of Anwar Sadat.
