Allal al-Fassi was a Moroccan thinker influenced by Muhammad Abduh, whose ideas he promoted in the country. He was the founder and leader of the Istiqlal Party of Morocco.

Biography
He was born in 1289 SH, corresponding to 1910 CE, in the city of Fez.

Works
Allal al-Fassi's works indicate that he was influenced by Muhammad Abduh in his thoughts, and he promoted his views in Morocco. He was also the editor of al-Bayyina magazine. His book, al-Naqd al-Dhati, was published in 1952 CE in Cairo.

Viewpoints and Movements
Allal al-Fassi was more of a political activist than a theorist, who thought in practice and for the sake of practice. Having started the struggle for the unity of Morocco in 1309 SH / 1930 CE, he founded the Istiqlal Party in 1325 SH / 1946 CE and took its leadership himself; and while residing in Cairo, he organized the Moroccan resistance movement.

In 1335 SH / 1956 CE, upon Morocco's independence, he returned to his homeland and held positions in the government and parliament.

Fassi's view on reformist thought was based on the axis of intellectual and social modernization in line with national tradition against Modernism influenced by the West. Despite all the differences between 20th-century Morocco and late 19th-century Egypt, and between Abduh and Fassi, Fassi's fundamental perspective and main concern were the same as Abduh's.

In his view, authentic Islam is sublime and uplifting, and must be freed from historical illusions and embellishments. This Islam will never hinder its followers from progress. He was strongly opposed to "negative distortion" which does not make Muslims "Westerners", but turns them into strange beings that are neither "self" nor "other". He strongly emphasized Morocco's independence as well as its Arab civilization and Islamic culture, and considered Morocco a member of the single human world. In his view, Morocco's national life could not endure separate from the teachings of Islam. Some scholars have considered Fassi's view as superficial "positivism" that prioritizes sociological analysis over historical analysis.

Death
He finally died in the year 1353 SH, corresponding to 1974 CE.
