After completing his military service, he joined the Basra Public Iron and Steel Corporation, working as a civil engineer. Following his involvement in the Rajab events of 1979 and the arrest of [[Ayatollah Martyr Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr|Ayatollah Martyr Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr]], he was pursued by the courts.
