Abdelfattah Mourou (born 1 June 1948 in Tunisia) is a lawyer and politician of the Islamist movement in Tunisia and one of the historical leaders of the Ennahda Movement. He served as Deputy of the movement and First Vice President of the Assembly of the Representatives of the People from 4 December 2014, then as Acting President of the Assembly from 25 July 2019 to November 2019. He became the Ennahda candidate for the 2019 Tunisian presidential election following the death of President Beji Caid Essebsi.

Biography
He was born in Tunisia. He studied at Sadikiya School. He then went to the Faculty of Law at the University of Tunis and graduated in 1970 in Law and Islamic Sciences. He worked as a judge until 1977 and then became a lawyer.

Political Activities
He began his Islamic activities from the year 1970 AD in middle schools and mosques. In 1968, he met Rached Ghannouchi in a mosque in Tunisia and agreed with him to establish the Islamic movement in Tunisia. In 1973, the police arrested Abdelfattah Mourou and Rached Ghannouchi after an attempt to organize a 100-person meeting in Sousse.

Following this incident, it was decided to create a secret organization (Islamic Group Organization), which was divided into regional and national structures, mainly active in mosques and universities, and published a newspaper that was distributed free of charge at some newsstands.

After harassment by Habib Bourguiba, the President of Tunisia, he moved to Saudi Arabia and spent years there until Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, the President of Tunisia after coming to power in Tunisia, summoned him.

Cooperation with the Muslim Brotherhood
He is one of the most famous speakers in Tunisia and from the Islamist group. In 1981, he became well known due to the Islamic movement of the Muslim Brotherhood known as the Ennahda Movement and was considered one of its most prominent leaders. However, the movement soon became the target of suppression. Mourou was arrested and spent two years in prison. After the attack on the Bab Souika police station in 1991, he was arrested for the second time. In 1992, the regime of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali launched a personal defamation campaign against him.

After this new arrest of Mourou, he announced the suspension of his membership in the Ennahda Movement. Afterwards, he stopped all his political activities in Tunisia, but continued the profession of law.

Return from Exile and Continuation of Activities
On 30 January 2011, a few days after the Tunisian Revolution and the fall of the regime, Rached Ghannouchi returned from exile. Mourou said that he would engage in political activity once again. Mourou participated in the Constituent Assembly elections with an independent list and with a group of independents called Safe Path, but was not victorious. After the elections, he was nominated for the position of advisor in the government of Hamadi Jebali, but was not appointed. He returned to the Ennahda Movement after the Ennahda conference in 2012 and was elected as one of the members of the movement's Shura Council and its Vice President, Ghannouchi.

Electoral Victory
In the 2014 parliamentary elections, Ennahda obtained the second place with 69 seats after the Nidaa Tunes Party (86 seats), and Abdelfattah Mourou obtained 2 seats for the movement in the Tunis electoral district. Initially, he and Fawzia Ben Fadda were elected as the second Vice President of the Council on behalf of the people from the Free Patriotic Union.

Attacks
He was attacked several times. Once, a group of young people affiliated with the Salafi movement verbally and physically attacked him violently on 23 January 2013 in front of the Al-Makki Mosque in Jamel located in Monastir Governorate.
