'''Émile Jamil Lahoud''' was the commander of the first fleet of the Lebanese Navy, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, and the eleventh President of Lebanon. He is the son of General [[Jamil Lahoud]], who played a pivotal role in establishing the Lebanese Army and securing independence.

==Biography==
He was born on 12 January 1936 in the town of Baabdath, [[Lebanon]].

==From Military Entry to Commander-in-Chief==
In 1968, he assumed command of the first fleet of the Lebanese Navy. From 1970 until 1983, while serving as head of the Military Office of the Lebanese Ministry of Defense, he held various positions within the army. Furthermore, as Commander-in-Chief from 1989 to 1998, he rebuilt the national army, which had been weakened by the civil war (1975–1990).

==Presidential Term==
He was elected as the fourteenth President of Lebanon on 24 November 1998. Although his presidential term was scheduled to end in December 2004, the Lebanese Parliament, following the approval of a bill in September 2004, extended his presidency for an additional three years until 2007. Émile Lahoud's presidential term concluded on 24 November 2007; however, due to difficulties arising over the election of a new president and the electoral system, before leaving the presidential palace, he issued a message declaring a state of emergency in Lebanon and handed over security control of the country to the army.

==Relations with Iran==
As a former President of Lebanon and an influential figure, Lahoud played a very positive role in Lebanon's past developments and maintained good relations with Tehran. In the past, he made significant efforts to expand relations with Iran. Lahoud's support for the Islamic Resistance during its prolonged struggle against the forces of the Zionist regime, particularly during the 33-day war with Israel, contributed significantly to Lebanon's successes and victories on the battlefield against the Zionist regime. Moreover, prior to his trip to Iran, he emphasized that his visit signified loyalty to Iran's support for Lebanon, especially during his presidency. In an interview with Al-Manar TV, Lahoud stated: "Iran's invitation dates back to when I was serving as president, but various events and occurrences prevented my travel to Tehran." Rejecting criticisms leveled against him, he added: "Several months ago, I decided to travel to Iran on this date because Iran stood by Lebanon without any ulterior motives and never asked for anything in return." Responding to a question regarding recent criticisms against him and the possibility of their intensification following his trip to Iran, the former Lebanese President remarked: "I believe in my convictions and await their criticisms." He labeled his critics as supporters of Israel, adding: "Jouni Abdo, head of the Lebanese Army Intelligence Organization, is among my critics; before the occupation of Beirut in 1982 and 1983, he was among those who paved the way for Israel's attack on Lebanon. At that time, I was among the staff officers of the army, and I recall that three months before the attack, Abdo visited staff officers and told them that Israel would occupy Beirut. One must ask: where did he obtain this information?!" Lahoud further stated: "Following the occupation of Beirut, Ariel Sharon, then Israeli Minister of Defense, resided in Jouni Abdo's home. Bringing suitcases of money from an Arab country, he distributed it among specific individuals and paid them a fixed monthly amount; I put an end to such practices during my term." The former President of Lebanon said: "The most important achievement we accomplished was defeating the enemy in 2000, liberating Lebanese soil, and defeating the enemy once again during the summer war of 2006. The remarks we occasionally hear are unimportant; what matters is that we triumphed over the enemy." Referring to U.S. pressure and subsequently the assassination of Rafic Hariri, Lahoud stated: "In the near future, the truth will become clear. They kill, then attend the funeral of the victim, and subsequently accuse everyone." In any case, relations between Iran and Lebanon are stable; governments and their orientations can only exert minor influences on these relations. Nevertheless, it appears that the new approach adopted by Iran is the correct one in relations with Lebanon, as it fosters cooperation with all of Lebanon and contributes to Lebanese unity, while also signaling the openness of Iranian policy toward all Lebanese factions.
